Bold. Nude. Luminous. Ombré. High shine. Kiss-proof. Moisturizing. Overlined. Sheer. How do you like to dress up your lips? Economists claim that “hemlines and heels rise and fall with the state of the stock market. But for those who really want to know how bad things are, there is only one item that counts: lipstick.” Dubbed the lipstick theory, studies indicate that during harsh times (especially during WWII) women tend to splurge on fancy lipsticks more than ever, whilst cutting back on every other expense! With roots that go back to the Great Depression of 1930, studies all show that when budgets are squeezed, people substitute large extravagances for small luxuries. Considering that a Chanel lipstick retails for $46, why would anyone deprive themselves of such an “accessible luxury”? From rosy to glossy, here are some fun formulas that had us do a double-take.

Rouge Allure Liquid Powder 950 Plaisir ($46) and Rouge Allure Velvet 69 Abstrait ($46) from Chanel

Total opposites, these shades will please those seeking to make a dramatic entrance (Abstrait) , as well as “girls (who) just want to have fun (Plaisir).” Launched last fall, these two hues are here to stay! Ideal for seamlessly transitioning from darker to sunnier days, Plaisir is flirtatious and vibrant, airy, and ravishing. Throw it in your carry on and take it with you on your next exotic getaway! Abstrait can be worn with minimal makeup, a cat eye and a polished do on a night out. It’s elegant and fashionable, super matte, velvety, and chic – in true Chanel fashion. We’re not only fond of the playful & fresh shade, Plaisir, but the highly anticipated Rouge Allure Liquid Powder formula ticks all the right boxes! Incredibly fun to apply, the packaging is very different from the current Chanel makeup offering as one must first squeeze the product onto the sponge applicator tip. Close enough to a liquid lipstick but with a creamy consistency, we bet we aren’t the only ones who won’t be able to get enough of it. Available at all Chanel beauty counters across Canada

Crystal Crème Shimmer Lip Crayon by Bite Beauty ($28)

We were excessively curious about Bite Beauty. With brick and mortar stores in LA, SF, Toronto, and NYC, the label is all about unique handcrafted lip colour, without any compromise. One can walk into any Lip Lab by Bite and walk out with a custom hue, perfect for you. The best part? Bite Beauty is all about clean products, clean beauty and clean ingredients. They embrace food-inspired ingredients that are unprocessed and safe and the label is cruelty-free. Starting to take a liking to what you are reading? You’re not alone, judging from the plethora of positive reviews scattered online. This crystal lip crayon is essentially glitter for grown-ups (read: easy to pull off and, yes, daytime-suitable). A super precise applicator, this mix of lip liner-in-a-lipstick formula is long-wearing, moisturizing, easy to apply, and easy to wear. Offered in 10 universally flattering hues, our go-to picks include Fuschia Frosting (vivid!), Violet Icing (IG-worthy), and Rosé Glacé (oh so pretty). We also feel Cocoa Crush should have a moment (a guaranteed hit on bronzed skin). Available at Sephora stores across Canada and

Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in FU$$Y ($23) by Fenty Beauty

Fenty has been making huge waves these last few years- we’re glad we finally got up close & familiar with the cosmetics giant. What’s the hype really about, anyway? Two things: the Gloss Bomb was created by Rihanna and was meant to be a universal shade so there was meant to be only ONE Gloss Bomb.

When it comes to FU$$Y, Riri explains that a girl can never have too much lip gloss: “I only create products I love, and I LOVE this new shade of Gloss Bomb, which I also universal. It has explosive shine with a hint of pink that can be worn alone or with lipstick. Your lips will be popping.,’ and, boy, is the Bajan beauty right. You’ll get explosive shine in a shade that is somewhat nude and partially sheer but slightly tinted, for an ultra-sensual finish and a distinct yet subtle aroma of peach and vanilla. The wand is large and can easily be applied on the go, in the dark, in the club, etc. Say hello to your newest indulgence!

Flower Balm in Pink by Winky Lux ($18)

This cruelty-free and paraben-free, all natural lip stain’s transparent property is so novel: it actually reacts with one’s skin’s pH levels, therefore creating a custom and unique shade of pink within 60 seconds. The Flower Balm line contains real chrysanthemum extract, on top of smelling absolutely delish, thanks to subtle aromas of coconut. Incredibly adorable and feminine, what’s not to like about a colour-changing flower balm? We’re super fond of its clear jelly-like appearance, its slightly shimmery appearance, and how easy it is to apply. When Flower Balm launched online, it sold out before its very first shipment. Enough said. Available at Murale and

Rouge Gourmand Glow Hydrating  Lip Balm in Granita by Lise Watier ($23)

We were taken by surprise when we saw this gorgeous jumbo-sized crayon land on our desk. What a bold move by Lise Watier and such innovative packaging! Available in 7 shades, this nourishing lip balm will appeal to those looking for an all-natural glow, (hello office makeup & no-makeup makeup). Comfort and shine are its modus operandi for a no-fuss application. The crayon is gorgeous and oh, so chic. Just trust us on this one. It should be noted that Ice Cream is our new all-time-favourite nude.
