Just as New York City inspired Gabrielle Chanel’s original vision, Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld is once again inspired today, as this year, CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art show was hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue.

As guests arrived at the prestigious MET, they were transported into a transcendent world of ancient spells and hushed atmospheres. Frescoed Egyptian rooms lead through the museum to the Temple of Dendur, built in 15 BC under Augustus Caesar in dedication to the Goddess Isis, and exhibited at the MET for the past fifteen years. The walls of the Temple of Dendur presented molten gold highlights, in a maze of hieroglyphic astral and animal signs, all of which amplified the collection inspired by ancient Egypt. Gold headdresses, oversized pearl collars, hammered pendants and cuffs, oversized shearling denim jackets, pyramid-shaped bags, statement costume jewelry, and croc-embossed leather was all showcased – as well as plenty of classic CHANEL tweed.

Alongside the mesmerizing apparel, the exaggerated, otherworldly beauty of CHANEL’s model army certainly didn’t fail to catch attention. Lucia Pica, CHANEL’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer, described the makeup aesthetic: “It’s fresh graphics and tells the story of the collection… The inspiration was clearly Egyptian and I wanted to give a more abstract futuristic feel. The black and white are the beginning of colors, blue and gold were picked from the collection as per Karl Lagerfeld’s request. I proposed a few looks and he really liked the feeling of the one chosen for this collection.”

Unarguably, the makeup looks were striking, distinguished, luxurious and elegant, perfectly fitting with the collection. The CALLIGRAPHIE DE CHANEL Hyperblack eyeliner gained particular praise from Lucia, as she says it was perfect for producing the striking cat scratch arcs. When asked for her professional tips, Lucia responded: “I used the PALETTE ESSENTIELLE for a fresh yet flawless face. I applied the eyeliner with LES PINCEAUX DE CHANEL Eyeliner Brush, through back and forth movements to get a strong black effect and finish the end into a very thin line to give the impression of movement.”

I believe it is safe to say that the show was a phenomenal success, with every aspect encapsulating CHANEL’s continued devotion to presenting luxurious, artistic traditions combined with vehement and enchanting futurism.
