Karl Lagerfeld could design Chanel with his eyes closed, and of late his mastery of the Chanel world has taken him beyond the tweed vest and quilted patterns of the Paris Atelier. He’s become a master mixer, hybridizing and adapting it to cultural and fashion influences from around the world. His India inspired Les Métiers D’Art 2012 collection was the perfect balance of both worlds, no to mention his more recent resort collection in Singapore, and for the spring 2014 collection, he’s been dabbling in the rarefied world of modern art. His flights of fancy surprise, delight and, of course, entertain. Under his creative vision, Chanel‘s ubiquitous tweed vest is spliced with 19th century Cowboys&Indians, urban Texas cool, and West Coast Bohemian chic. Beyond the clothes, there is a deeper symbolism: the conquering of the American West, the last frontier. Everything that you could expect was there: the leather fringes, the Kentucky Derby neckties, the Native American prints, knitted ponchos and sweaters, feathers, and more. He shifted from Victorian skirts and jackets, in masculine tailoring in western style, to more urban outfits of jeans, epic leather jackets, to flowing hippie-chic dresses, leaving no reference untouched. Making all the pieces relevant and modern, without going into costume territory.

The Chanel in Dallas event was even bigger than his previous shows (it seems Lagerfeld likes to outdo himself). Held at the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition Hall, known for it’s art-deco style, for the occasion it was turned into Far West inspired backdrop that many a movie studio would be envious of. The show itself was preceded with a presentation of Lagerfeld’s movie “The Return”, aptly named as the life of Coco Chanel and of her House seems to run in cycles. A mash up of attendees, celebrities, and fashionable socialites like Alexa Chung, Dakota Fanning, Poppy Delevingne, as well as the face for the collection: Kristen Stewart (the campaign will be out in May), were all seated in vintage American cars, assembled into a makeshift drive-in to view the short movie.

After a 15 year absence from the fashion world, Coco Chanel reopened her atelier in 1954. But after the 2nd world war, she wasn’t seen as ‘fashionable’ anymore. But she continued to stick with her timeless style and, eventually at the end of the fifties (and it’s corseted skirts), her more relaxed attitude towards dressing realigned with the modern spirit of the 60s. Especially when her clothes started to appear on famous socialites (as well as American women) like Jacqueline Onassis. The fashion retailer Neiman Marcus was one of the first buyers of her return collection. It was clear that for Karl Lagerfeld, as well as Mademoiselle, it came full circle in Dallas.
