Every end of year encourages a reflection on the past months, whether it be with your life experiences, your job, your relationships, or for us, music! 2017, much like 2016, has been a great year for music. We’ve heard a lot of amazing music this year, from Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Tyler The Creator, to Halsey, Kehlani, and Drake, just to name a few. In addition to meeting with some artists passing through Canada during their tours, we’ve also had the chance to photograph some artists at Osheaga, Montreal’s main music event. Here are some of our favorite musical moments with some of our favorite artists to watch in 2018.

Bishop Briggs is a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter of indie pop. She is best known for her passionate, fiery song ‘River’ which hit the Top 10 of the rock and alternative charts and has over 34 million streams on Spotify alone. She released her self-titled first EP earlier this year and recently dropped her latest single “Dream.” If you like fierce, soulful-rocker vocals, definitely go and discover her music, you won’t be disappointed.

Bibi Bourelly is a German singer and songwriter who recently introduced the world to her remarkable and unique sound with her first two brilliantly raw singles, “Ego” and “Riot.” Her undeniable spirit radiates through her songs which makes her music incredibly relatable. Her sound is a combination of a perfect translation of feelings into words, vulnerability and self-confidence put harmoniously onto an Alternative R&B melody. She is also the writer of several notable songs including Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and “Higher” and Nick Brewer’s “Talk to Me.” For an inspiring, uplifting, song that reflects the realness of struggling in your twenties, listen to “Ballin’.” The fearless Bourelly is definitely one to watch, as she is now out to conquer the world as a solo artist.

Wordsmith, storyteller, lyricist, poet… These are all words that come to mind when I think of Jacob Banks. With one of the most thrilling voices, you’ll hear in a while, this self-taught musician has introduced the world to his new signature sound – what he calls “digital soul.” His voice will surely get you excited for a new era of soul. With a voice that will definitely stop listeners in their tracks, his latest EP also puts a spotlight on his songwriting skills. A true poet, Banks has mastered the art of writing and creating with emotion, metaphors, and verbalization that are so exquisite they’ll make you visualize the story, which only a great and genuine artist can do. If you haven’t discovered him yet, I urge you to listen to his latest single “Unknown (To You)” from his forthcoming album The Village, as well as his third EP, “The Boy Who Cried Freedom.”

Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter are the American musicians behind the electro-rock sound of Phantogram. Known for their innovative style, mixing electronica, indie rock, pop and trip-hop, the pop-duo has been creating genre-bending music since 2007 when they formed. With several albums and EPs, if you haven’t discovered them yet, you have a great selection of projects to dive into, starting with their latest album “Three.” That being said, you probably heard this song already, but there’s no harm in revisiting one of the duo’s best-known song “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore.

At only fifteen years of age signer/songwriter Billie Eilish has already established herself at the forefront of indie pop music. From her viral smash “Ocean Eyes” though to her release of “Don’t Smile At Me” EP on Interscope, she’s quickly establishing herself as a literate performer with a keen eye for crafting songs in concert with her dance, producing infectious slices of artpop mastery. Listen to one of her most popular tracks “bellyache“, and you’ll understand our obsession with this artist.

The career of Zara Larsson is cut straight from a modern fairy tale. At the age of ten, she won the Swedish version of Got Talent, thanks to her powerful interpretation of “My Heart Will Go On” by CÉLINE DION. With her fresh new award on her side, she was ready to conquer the music industry and show them all that she was the real deal despite her young age. These days, Zara Larsson is riding high on the release of her debut LP So Good, which sounds like the soundtrack of your wildest summer. Hardworking, smart and outspoken, Zara Larsson belongs to the new category of pop stars that prefer to be real rather than perfect; something that smacks you right in the face as soon as you met her. Watch her latest music video for “Don’t Let Me Be Yours“, to be up-to-date with all things Zara Larsson.
