Whenever I’m in that makeup slump, you know the one: where you wake up in the morning and you just put on some BB cream and mascara and head out the door, ignoring all the makeup goodies you have lying around, just begging to be used. Sad, I know. The best trick I found to get some excitement back into making my face up is to reach out for some inspiration at the altar of a beauty icon.

For the quickly approaching (and hopefully scorching) summer, I’ve turned to the smoldering beauty, Sophia Loren. Not only for her timeless good looks, but also for her chutzpah and sexiness, which ooze out of every movie and every picture you’ll happen to find her in.

Even if we remember her for her iconic cat-eye liner, it’s fascinating to discover that she actually went through many looks. From the Elizabeth Taylor inspired waves, thick and high-arched brows and the red lips, to her sexy Bardot-esque inspired golden locks and orange coral lip, to her spidery seventies lashes. And the most surprising of all, is that Sophia always manages to stay Sophia, no matter what fashionable look-of-the-day she happens to be sporting because that Italian sultriness is always simmering beneath. So much in fact that her 60s beauty incarnation was responsible for launching the Supermodel look of the early 90s: just think of Linda, Naomi and the likes with the black liner, full brows and nude mouth.

A little mood board for inspiration to channel that easygoing sexy Italian style… and a roundup of her best looks.
