It seems like oils have gained a lot of popularity over the last few years, simultaneously as the highly coveted luminous glowy skin trend. There’s an extensive variety of facial and body oils, available to us to cater to all the different needs our skin may have.

These ultra-quenching liquids with unsung benefits deliver quick hydration, anti-aging and calming properties and that highly coveted healthy glow that everybody craves. The allure of oils is that they not only treat multiple needs but some can also multi-task, being the latest popular alternative to moisturizers or serums. Facial oils often consists of cold-pressed or a blend of essential oils along with other elements like acids, vitamins, and regenerative ingredients. Pure essential oils are distilled from plants using steam and are mostly sought for their therapeutic effects. Cold-pressed oils are obtained through pressing and grinding fruit or seeds with stainless steel presses and are generally softer and less fragrant.

FACE OILS

Face oils can be used alone or layered under or over skin care. If you require an extra boost of hydration or enjoy a more radiant complexion, oils are an effective way of getting the desired effect, no matter your skin type or needs. You may use them under, mixed with or instead of your regular moisturizer or as a replacement for your serum. They deeply hydrate (among many things), with fatty acids and antioxidants and are appropriate for day and night use.

Ingredients like Bois de rose, Pumpkin, Carrot seed, Rosehip, Grapeseed, Sea Buckthorn, Hemp seed, Marula and Vitamin E have anti-aging properties, while ingredients like Aloe vera, Neroli, Calendula, Peppermint, Amellia, Rosemary, Chamomile, Sage, Eucalyptus, Tea tree and Lavender have anti-inflammatory benefits. If hydration is what you are seeking, look for ingredients like Almond, Jojoba, Argan, Moringa, Avocado, Olive and Coconut.

Combinations of pure plant extracts containing ingredients like Rosewood, Geranium and Lotus can even cater to mixed and oily skin type. They perfect, refine and improves skin’s overall texture and surface while restoring its balance. Oil blends closely mimic the skin’s natural oils convincing the brain that each pore already has enough moisture, sending the message that the skin doesn’t need to produce more oil.

BODY OILS

As much as we take care of our face, let’s not forget our body! Body oils are a great way to moisturize our skin, especially this summer, to help it recover from the sun.

HAIR OILS

Some treat, some moisturize or some simply add shine. Depending on your hair type, choose an oil that will embellish it’s texture.

Pro tips:

  • During the summer, layer an oil over your SPF for some added hydration to create a protective barrier, which will prevent moisture to evaporate (which often happens with sunblock)
  • Some oils (like Caudalie’s Divine Oil or Nuxe’s Huile Prodigieuse) can be used on the face, body and hair.
  • For a boost of radiance and hydration, mix several drops into, or layer underneath or over a moisturizer or foundation. It is also a good way to boost the hydrating properties of most products you have on your top shelf.
  • For more glamour, try shimmering oils!
