I think it was somewhere halfway through my quarantine that I expressed to my friends how much I was missing wine bars. I know they have a bad rep and some might even call it something that definitely belongs in the Pre-COVID era, but let me explain. For every poorly lit place trying to sell you two times the price of a bottle that you can find at the SAQ, you have a bar where talented industry vets with a deep knowledge of and passion for wine are intent on sharing what they love with the world.

This is exactly why I got excited when I learned about the opening of NELLi. Located in the Old Port in Montreal, more precisely inside the Hotel Nelligan, it is the brand-new establishment from the Antonopoulos Group (William Gray, Modavie, Jacopo, Verses Bistro, Kyo and so much more).

Offering by day breakfast options, along with a selection of fresh and healthy salads for lunch, the place becomes by night a bar where everyone can come to enjoy an always changing selection of natural wines, handpicked by sommelier Adrien De Philip, previously of two Michelin-starred concepts L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon London and Le Bristol Paris. They also have a food menu that includes oysters, cheese and charcuterie, shishito peppers, along with NELLi’ signature French herb roasted chicken.

Thanks to the innovation of local design firm CAMDI Design, the hotel’s atrium has been completely refreshed and provides a new living area for the hotel and NELLi’s guests and a green moss wall has been added to the inner courtyard, surrounding the existing fountain full of plants.

Wine bars pride themselves on an educational aspect that sets them apart from other drinking establishments and this is exactly why I still enjoy them. I honestly can’t wait to go out (yes, with my mask on) and discovered the whole experience offered at NELLI.
