From August 20-25, the iconic urban celebration, Festival Mode & Design (FMD) by Groupe Sensation Mode, opens for its 18th year. Taking place at the Quartier des Spectacles in Montreal, the largest outdoor fashion and design event in North America will be six days and six nights of non-stop action, featuring a myriad of programming, including fashion shows, performances, live creative sessions, concerts, design showcases, and pop-up shops.

The highly popular FMD Talks are returning to the event this year, giving an opportunity for the public to listen to distinguished speakers in a series of panels and lectures. This year, highlights from the conference series include Montreal: A History of Fashion, where Eva Friede, journalist and former fashion editor of the Montreal Gazette, will welcome founder of Le Chateau Herschel Segal, and Stephane Le Duc hosts a discussion with internationally renowned names Robert Lepage, Caroline Issa, Francois Demachy, and Vincent Leret. In the Business Lunch series, Jacques Nantel will speak with Sofia Sokoloff, Elisabeth Rioux, Andreanne Marquis, Jean-Christophe Bedos, and designer Marie Saint-Pierre. Tickets start at $25.

Outdoors, the numerous free events run all day long. The popular catwalk at Place des Festivals will return, setting the stage for both fashion shows and creative performances. You can expect over 20 runway shows over the six days, from Canadian designers and major brands such as Alton Gray, Dynamite, La Vie en Rose, Vincent d’Amérique, and Ardene. The next gen of fashion will also debut some of their greatest designs when students from LaSalle, Ecole de mode du Cegep Marie-Victorin, and the Youth Fusion program are given their moment in the spotlight. Also on the itinerary are a dozen local designers – Marie-Ève Aubry, Yung_Alexander, Ève Gravel, Master Bougaricci, Autre Riche Gendrless, Sage Paul, Robert Atelier, Agence Luna, Kata Fashion Company, Beurd, Guillaum Chaigne, and Bonvilain – who will be unveiling their latest collections. On-site, more than 40 pop-ups and food trucks will set up shop each day, creating a unique showcase of local artisans and designers for festival-goers to discover.

Besides fashion, the big celebration is a perfect occasion to find new musical talents. Main stage artists include La Voix 6 contestant Cherry Lena, brilliant beat-maker Marie-Gold, and Montreal rapper Nate Husser. DJs like Heidy Pinet, Forrest, Tōkinoise, and Tommy Kruise will be on-site every day to get the party started, and all your favourite radio hosts will be around for the Apéros Musicaux Rouge fm & Virgin radio to add to the hype.

Around the city, the Fashion & Design experience can be seen at partner venues, like the McCord Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal, and the Cinéma du Parc.

Starting this year, FMD is introducing Brigade FMD18, an exciting new element of passionate and engaging spokespeople who are heavily involved in different aspects Canadian & local culture. The spirited bunch, consisting of Lolitta Dandoy (fashion), Stéphane Le Duc (conferences), Cherry Lena (music), and Alexandra “Spicey” Landé (dance), will help to highlight all the excitement leading up to and during the big bash.
