TRAIN SAFELY AT HOME
“What are your sleep habits?”
This is definitely not a question that I like to answer. As someone who is overly anxious, I can barely get 6 hours on a good night of sleep, something that make people look at me like I am about to crack at any moment. But over the phone, Val Desjardins seems to genuinely care about my wellbeing. As a part of my one-month trial of her Digital Studio, we have decided to book a phone session to make sure she guides me through the right steps on my fitness journey. I was expecting questions about how I train or if I like to run, but not ones regarding my mental health.

“It goes together. You can train as hard as you want, 5 hours a day and every day, but it is all for nothing if you don’t adapt your lifestyle. It goes from how much water you drink a day to what’s stopping you from feeling truly at peace with yourself. I like to know what’s going on inside the head of my clients and also, what is their lifestyle. It is not about changing them, but about making sure we find the right balance. Like, if you tell me you like to drink whisky, I won t tell you to switch to green tea every night. But I will adapt your program accordingly” explains Val.
Val Desjardins has played elite soccer for years, runs half-marathons, has done seven years of roller derby, gives spinning classes for charity, etc. In parallel, she studied sociology and photography. A serious roller derby injury led her to pursue full-time high-performance training.
She currently works as a personal trainer and has been known to collaborate with many high profiles, celebrity clients, such as Jennifer Aniston, Ariane Moffatt and Coeur de Pirate. She is an entrepreneur, athlete, coach and the owner of Pump Fitness MTL. She is well known for her never-dying energy and to be someone deeply concerned about the mental and physical health of her clients and her community.
To make sure that people stay motivated while working out safely from home, she launched a digital platform bringing together live and on demand training and workouts designed for all levels and health goals. It means that if you are busy working and have to miss one of the live trainings, you can catch up later thanks to their multimedia library. Basically, you have no excuse to skip a training session.
I personally tried the program for a month, mixing core and cardio exercises. As Val had explained to me, my fitness journey had to be all about making myself stronger. Also, before starting the program, I have already decided to ignore the short-term results. If you commit to the long-term process, the results will come anyway. And after a month, I actually ended up feeling stronger, but mostly, I ended up with a routine that was working for me. As for my sleeping habits, let’s just say I still have a lot of work to do.
