The first few weeks of the year (and right into February) are a flurry of fashion activity. With awards season in full swing, followed by fashion month, there is enough style to swing a cat at. No doubt, there is always a bit of crossover amongst events and industries but among recent standout events are CFDA president Tom Ford’s show in LA, Coterie’s NYFW run, and stars and customers alike sitting front row – blurring the lines of the once sacred institution.

Tom Ford presented his collection in LA before the Oscars

CFDA president, film auteur, fashion designer, and all around glam powerhouse that is Tom Ford presented his F/W 2020 collection at the most glamorous space and time in all the land – in LA, Friday night of Oscars weekend, where star power is at its brightest, and all seemingly at his front row. Celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Renee Zellwegger, Lil Nas X, and Tracee Ellis Ross attended the “very LA” show at Milk Studios, which got East coast tongues wagging as to why he wasn’t showing during NYFW.

Chanel slayed the Oscars red carpet with high wattage black, as only Chanel could do

Basic black is almost an insult if you are speaking in Chanel terms. Though it could be said it is a safe choice, the Chanel army was out in full force in the powerful black and white combo the house is known for. Margo Robbie, Penelope Cruz, and Lucy Boynton won praises for their looks with Billie Eillish making heads turn in an amazing white tweed pyjama like set.

Coterie ran alongside NYFW to attract buyers in town

The blurring of lines and the cross over culture we’re seeing in many artistic industries (fashion, music, tv & film) was evident with the decision to run the fashion industry trade show Coterie alongside NYFW. As fashion calendars shift and fashion weeks dissolve, new plans are devised to win over customers and revenue.

Biodegradable design from Moskal

Stephanie Moscall- Varey gets a shout out from Sarah Mower

The Moskal designer, a fellow of the Susan Rogers Fashion Institute and now at the London College of Fashion, received a shoutout from industry heavy weight Sarah Mower. In an article for 10Magazine, the fashion journalist and critic included the Canadian expat in her coverage on bio design and the use of new natural materials.

A mashup of attendees goes to the shows

Celebs, customers, and reality stars attended NYFW, blurring the lines of the once strictly guarded industry event. A recent article on The Blonds revealed that the fashion designers have paying guests at their shows who want that VIP front row experience, while the stars of Cheer (a cheerleading docu-series on Netflix) sat front row at Brandon Maxwell with industry vets Lauren Santo Domingo and Darek Blasberg also in attendance.
