Sustainable Shopping
BOUTIQUE ROUND UP

There is a lot of talk about vintage and consignment stores these days. Spawning from the knowledge that fashion is the number two polluter, disposable fashion is being rapidly disposed of, and fast fashion’s deplorable working conditions have consumers taking a new approach to shopping. There is also a lot of money to save when you shop resale as well as when you sell your lightly used clothing at consignment stores. This rise in popularity has second-hand clothing finally shedding its shabby reputation.

As September began, a new fashion buzz word hit the scene. “Second Hand September,” a new initiative brought into the zeitgeist by popular UK charity shop Oxfam, and endorsed by acclaimed actress and director Michaela Coel. They’re asking everyone to shop second hand for 30 days, in an effort to give clothing a longer life before it hits a landfill.  Choosing September is apropos, as September is usually the beginning of ‘fashion month’, and the time in which we begin to adapt our clothes to a new season, and have a deep urge to go shopping. We can all shop more sustainably by hitting up local thrift shops, curated vintage shops, and designer consignment stores that have hidden gems that are ripe for the taking.

Here we round up a list of vintage and designer consignment boutiques to help you shop more sustainably.

I Miss You Vintage A mainstay Ossington favourite, I Miss You Vintage is a mid-sized shop that packs a big punch. Owner Julie Yoo and her shop have been a fixture on the street since 2005, offering great quality designer and unique finds. It’s not every day you find something from Christopher Kane or a brightly coloured Birkin.

Consign Toronto A treasure trove just a stone’s throw away from Trinity Bellwoods Park. The spirited owner Dag Larsen re-sells contemporary and designer goods over his three-story consignment space. His shop is a must-stop for gem hunters looking to update their wardrobes in a sustainable way.

Mama Loves You Vintage – A staple vintage store with a strong Instagram following (19k) that allows them to post and sell through the platform. Their strong following makes things move quickly so you have to be quick or head down to their Queen West location.

Retyche  – This designer accessories showroom in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood is committed to offering pre-loved gems while contributing to the circular economy. They have a sister property in Montreal and a robust digital and social platform. Their name includes Re- for reuse and rediscover, and Tyche which translates to the Goddess of prosperity. If you’re after that monogrammed Fendi handbag this shop is your new best friend.

Rewind – Located up on Mt. Pleasant, this luxury re-sale boutique benefits from the upscale neighbourhoods in its vicinity. They price things to sell, and their gorgeous next-to brand-new pieces get scooped up fast.  Chanel, Gucci, Hermes –  the gang’s all there but if you’re after a pair of Golden Goose sneakers you better follow along on IG.

Garb Designer consignment store Garb on Queen West boasts the most Instagrammed storefront on the street. It is famous for its witty fashion-forward quotes scribbled on the glass that are perfect for the gram. “Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes or it doesn’t.” –  Karl Lagerfeld.  What is also perfect is the curated selection and price points at this luxury re-sale spot. Their website is very helpful for those looking to consign, with a list of brands they are unable to accept. Ed note: The shop dog is also the accessories model!

Chosen Vintage– Vintage lovers know there are different levels of vintage shopping from thrifting to archival. Chosen is curated, and is perfect for those who want an edited on-trend selection, and thoughtfully selected for their shopping experience.
