Marni Spring/Summer 2021
The Marni VOL.1 Collection celebrates Marni in progressive new ways, representing a clash between Marni’s rich history, its present, and its future.
By Luisa Tarantino
Inspired by the unusual circumstances as of late, designer Francesco Risso seeks to explore and amplify meaning; the VOL.1 collection presents the concept of a process that is always still in fieri (in progress), further emphasizing the motif of a clash between Marni’s past and present. New hybrids and new forms are created, remaining faithful to the House’s roots and stylistic principles, all while looking to the future. The goal: to celebrate the essence of what Marni stands for.
The ‘clash’ motif is apparent through the collection’s joyful use of patterns, prints, and aesthetics. Various patterns and prints clash with mohair stripes and grungey silhouettes — a playful print of kissing lips are paired with a dress that falls askew, with volumes and structure a matter of surprise. Dada tracksuits, boxy tailoring, long dresses and skirts, cardigans, shirts, and more make up the collection’s repertoire. Looks are deconstructed, and formality tainted. Marni describes the collection as such: joyful liberation.
The collection’s Lookbook, conceived through the lens of photographer Jack Davison via Facetime, presents new emotional landscapes in a play between intimacy, self-expression, colour, and texture.
