Canada’s best

Canadian womenswear designer Victoria Hayes is surely Canada’s best kept secret. Her Spring/Summer 2020 runway debut at this year’s New York Fashion Week proves as much.

Victoria Hayes is without a doubt Canada’s best kept secret. While she has already presented her collections at NYFW for two years now and is the 2019 recipient of the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award for Womenswear, she has still to be introduced to many. Indeed, Victoria Hayes is a pleasant discovery and with her many impressive credits, she is definitely a designer to look out for.

A Toronto native, Hayes left for New York in her last year of pre-med when she realized her passion for fashion design outweighed her interest in pursuing a medical degree. She took summer courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design before graduating with a BFA from Parsons School for Design. She was honoured with the school’s prestigious honor, the Women’s Wear Designer of the Year in 2014. During her degree, she interned at top brands such as Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Alvin Valley, Suno, and Honor.

Hayes officially launched her label in 2016. Since then, she has garnered the attention of big celebrity names and has had the pleasure of dressing stars like Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Alicia Keys, and even Madonna for high-profile events and red carpets.

This year, the international spotlight was on Hayes as she presented her Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The show was attended by stars such as Kimmy Shields, Miss Jay Alexander, and influencers such as Krystal Bick and Lisa DiCicco Cahue. Even more, Canadian supermodel Coca Rocha, who is a fan and wearer of  Hayes’ label, closed Hayes’ debut show.

She defines her label as feminine, subversive, and celebratory, and her new collection is certainly so. Inspired by the film ‘Space Jam’ and a 90s nostalgia, a time in which Hayes, a self-proclaimed tomboy, played basketball for 8 years, the collection gives sporty silhouettes such as oversized blazers, jumpsuits, and nylon windbreakers a luxurious spin in the form of Swaroski crystals. The collection explores the dichotomy of present-day womanhood by marrying the beautiful and aggressive, the romantic and the protective, and the tough and precious.

Here are some of the best looks from her incredible Spring/Summer 2020 collection from New York Fashion Week.
